Shark finning is the appalling, wasteful practice of catching a shark and cutting off its fins, then discarding the (often live) shark at sea. The fins are prized for shark fin soup, served at banquets and important occasions in China, and for traditional medicine, although recent press indicates that young Asians are becoming more aware of the threats to sharks and the appeal of shark fin soup may be dwindling.
