The Most Endangered Sea Creatures

By March 28, 2010

Follow me on:

The Daily Green has a photo slide show proposing the 13 most endangered sea creatures. All of the creatures here are in trouble, but none received any additional protection at the recent CITES meeting.

The Daily Green's list:

  • Bluefin tuna
  • Cape penguins
  • Coral
  • Gray whales
  • Hector's dolphin
  • Humphead wrasse
  • Krill
  • Loggerhead sea turtle
  • Manatees
  • Mediterranean monk seal
  • Chinook salmon
  • Vaquita, and the
  • Southern sea otter

Noticeably absent was the North Atlantic right whale, of which only about 400 remain, and other sea turtles, such as the Kemp's ridley turtle, often declared the most endangered sea turtle. What do you think? Do you agree with the list? What do you think are the most endangered sea creatures?

I have a question regarding starfish. i have just returned from cancun and found a starfish. poor judgement told me to bring it home. Now, this might sound strange but we put it in the shower stall over night. I got up while it was still dark out and peered in the shower and couldnt believe my eyes. There were about 5-6 tiny glowing pin lights comming off the starfish’s back, I swear, is this common or have you ever heard of this before?

Hi John,
Thanks for your comment. I assume your starfish is alive (or was)? Can you describe the starfish? Does it have thick or thin arms, what color it is, how many arms does it have, etc? It sounds like you experienced bioluminescence, which is a chemical reaction that produces light. This often occurs in plankton, but can occur in other organisms, including species of fish and starfish (sea stars). You can comment here or e-mail me directly (see contact info in my bio) if you’d like to send a picture or discuss in more detail. I look forward to hearing more about this!
