Recent incidents involving killer whales at SeaWorld, including several orca deaths and the death of a whale trainer, have caused some to rethink their positions on whales in captivity. On one hand, whales in captivity may provide a unique research opportunity and allow the public to interact with whales up close, possibly fostering a greater appreciation for marine life. On the other, whales are beings that can think and feel, and perhaps a captive environment is not worth the risks to the health of individual whales (or those who work with them).
