Happy World Oceans Day!
A day to celebrate the ocean was first proposed by the Government of Canada in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. World Oceans Day was unofficially celebrated until 2009, when the United Nations officially declared June 8 of each year World Oceans Day.
Did you do anything to celebrate the ocean today? I got to spend my morning on a local estuary teaching middle school students about marine life and local history. This weekend, I'll hopefully be on my second whale watch of the season - and every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to live near, and enjoy the ocean regularly.
Why is the ocean important? There's many ways the ocean is important, some more obvious than others. The ocean:
- Provides food
- Provides oxygen through the photosynthesis of tiny plant-like organisms called phytoplankton
- Regulates climate
- Is a source of medicines and food...
- and much more.
I hope you got a chance to enjoy and celebrate the ocean today!

So let me reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending time to discuss this issue here on your web site.
