Smithsonian.com just released the Ten Best Ocean Stories of 2012. Their list includes important issues such as greater awareness and progress on the issues of shark finnin, and marine debris, depressing stories like how Arctic sea ice hit an all-time low and that half the living coral on the Great Barrier Reef has died, and more purely scientific stories, such as James Camerons' exploration of the deep sea, studying sea life from space and the amazing behaviors of squid.
