Marine Life 101: What is Marine Biology, Basics of Oceanic Life

Learn about marine biology, what marine biology is and the basics of oceanic life. Learn what distinguishes oceanic life from terrestrial life.

Marine Life Profiles

Profiles of different types of marine life. Learn about species of plankton, marine algae, and marine invertebrates and vertebrates.

Marine Habitat Profiles

About 70% of our planet is covered with water. Most of this water is salt water, made up of the oceans covering the Earth. Within these oceans, there are many different types of habitat, ranging from freezing polar ice to tropical coral reefs. Here you will find profiles of the major marine habitats and the organisms that inhabit them.

Marine Conservation - Conservation of Marine Life and Habitats

Conservation and protection of marine life is becoming more important as we better understand the importance of the oceans and our impacts on them. Learn about conservation issues, current events and threats to marine life, ways to help the ocean and how to become an ocean activist.

Marine Life Watching and Photography

Discover marine life through whale watching, Scuba diving and more. Learn tips for how to photograph marine life above water and underwater and view marine life image galleries.

Resources and Lesson Plans

There's a lot to learn about marine life. Explore study guides, find lesson plans for teachers, and test your knowledge with marine life quizzes and games.

Marine Careers, Internships and Volunteer Opportunities

Want to work with marine life? Explore career paths for budding marine biologists, look at job opportunities and listings, find an internship or summer program, or volunteer to help the marine environment.

Cetaceans - Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises

The term "cetacean" refers to all whales, dolphins and porpoises. There are over 80 species of cetaceans. These cetaceans are divided into two groups - the baleen whales, or mysticetes, and the toothed whales, or odontocetes. All cetaceans are mammals and breathe air, bear live young, and are endothermic.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are reptiles that live in a marine or brackish environment. There are seven species of sea turtles. They all have long, paddle-like flippers, which are great for swimming, but poor for walking on land. Here you can learn more about sea turtles and the sea turtle species.

Sharks

Sharks are some of the most popular, most-feared, and misunderstood creatures in the ocean. Learn more about sharks, including types of sharks, information on shark behavior, why sharks attack and terms related to sharks.

Starfish (Sea Stars)

Would you like to learn about starfish? Starfish aren't really fish, so they are more properly known as sea stars. Here you can learn more about sea stars, including what they look like, how they feed and how they reproduce. You can also view an image gallery of sea stars.

Invertebrates

There are thousands of invertebrates in the oceans. Invertebrates are commonly defined as an animal without a spine. Here you can learn more about invertebrates, and read facts and view images of many kinds of marine invertebrates.
