The word brackish, used in a marine life context, refers to a type of water - water that is a mix of salt water (sea water) and freshwater. Brackish water is salty, but not as salty as water you'd find out in the middle of the ocean.
You would find brackish water in an estuary, mangrove swamp, and in some intertidal zones.
