Definition: Evolution is the process by which species change over a long period of time. As species evolve, characteristics that enable them to better survive and reproduce in their environment are favored genetically. Organisms pass on these characteristics to future generations in a process known as natural selection, in which the “fittest” organisms carry on and those less well adapted do not.
