Brief Introduction
We went out on a July morning with Monterey Bay Whale Watch in Monterey, CA.
My Whale Watch
The krill were abundant in the underwater canyon, so the sightings were plentiful. We spotted blue whales, humpback whales, a couple of minke whales, Pacific white-sided dolphin, right whale dolphin, cormorants (among other sea birds), sea lions, and harbor seals. It was very exciting and I would highly recommend a trip with this knowledgeable organization. They have a biologist on staff who is known for her killer whale studies, and they are a post for monitoring whale migration routes. The naturalist on board pointed out species and told us facts and conservation efforts associated with each. We were able to see lunge feeding behavior of humpback whales, which was well worth the trip.
Lessons Learned
- I had never been on a boat before, so I took seasick medicine before the trip and didn't have any problems. We took photos and also video. The video clips were the most meaningful after the trip. We didn't get a clear shot of the lunge feeding we observed, but we also didn't want to spend our trip watching everything through the camera screen. It's more important to enjoy the time. And we did!
